Tasty Dishes Abound at Second Annual Shangri-La Coastal Cook-off

Coastal Cook-off judges (L to R) Sandy Post, a former Shangri-La Director, and Roy Emerick, manager of Starfish Point Condos in Newport, are served one of the chili cookoff entries.

Chili, chowder and dessert were the featured menu items at the second annual Shangri-La Coastal Cook-off, held Friday, Sept. 24, at the Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort in Newport, Oregon.

Over 15 entries were judged by a panel of local community members and Shangri-La staff. Each entry’s chef remained anonymous until after the judging was complete. Judges scored the chili, chowder, and dessert entries on color, appearance, texture, and of course, taste.

After judges handed in their final marks, approximately 170 Shangri-La stakeholders including people served and their families, staff, and community members from Newport, Florence and Salem, were invited to enjoy the feast. Afternoon festivities included an awards presentation, tile painting, and bingo.

Cook-off blue ribbon winners were:
Chowder: Ginger Jones, Shangri-La Housing Director
Chili: Robin Winkle, Shangri-La Facilities and Technology Director
Dessert: Donna White, mother of Lorinda, a Shangri-La person served
